Biba & Marie are spreading a sense of calm in our classrooms and homes

Occupational Therapy Assistants Biba and Marie have been instrumental in introducing the transformative power of Yoga to individuals we support. Last year, their dedication led them to complete a Special Yoga course, driven by the desire to extend its benefits to the young people and adults in our care.

After meticulous planning and preparation, Biba and Marie launched yoga sessions in Swinderby School, Calman College and Sunndach House. Biba’s expertise shines as she leads morning breathing sessions for both students and colleagues, creating a calm atmosphere essential for starting the school day on the right foot. Recognising the importance of easing anxiety during transitions, her guidance helps regulate breathing and provides a sense of tranquility.

“I go to each Special Yoga breathing session without any expectation for young people. I observe them as I start with the breathing and then continue with the routine. They are now used to me and know what we are going to do. We have some ‘magical’ moments of calmness during some sessions. Generally, Special Yoga is well received by staff too.â€ÌýBiba Kayd

Meanwhile, Marie has seamlessly integrated yoga into the daily routine for Sunndach House residents, incorporating breathing sessions into group activities. These sessions not only promote relaxation but also enhance overall wellbeing.

“Special Yoga breathing sessions are all about meeting the young people where they’re at, in that moment in time. This mindset has supported the young people to feel more confident when taking part in the sessions, as well as when they demonstrate techniques outside of the breathing sessions not only to myself but to their supporting team members. Colleague feedback has been positive not only from the young person’s response but how they themselves feel after the session.“ÌýMarie Upchurch

The impact of Biba and Marie’s efforts has not gone unnoticed. Colleagues have shared their observations, noting a palpable sense of calm and relaxation among participants. Their feedback speaks volumes about the positive influence of these sessions on both our young people and supporting staff members:

Here is what colleagues have said about sessions so far:

“Pupils may not follow the actions but there appears to be a calm atmosphere in class.â€

“Young people were noticeably more relaxed both during and after the session with less unhappy vocalisations and sensory seeking behaviours.”

“It’s a great addition having Special Yoga breathing to support the YP to feel calm and supports their engagement.â€

“Marie is very versatile with her approach, she adjusts the techniques to meet the YP’s needs such as squeezing instead of tapping.â€

Well done Biba & Marie!
