Welcome
Meaning “house of joy”, Tigh Sogan is a purpose-built house located close to the busy market town of Croydon, which also has a tram link and offers a huge range of local facilities including a cinema, two large shopping centres and plenty of places to eat out. There are libraries nearby in Sanderstead and in Purley, both only a short walk away.
Access to public transport couldn’t be easier, with South Croydon bus garage a five-minute walk from the home and Purley Oaks train station situated at the end of the road. The home is situated between two parks, one which boasts a beautifully kept flower garden and a church and the other provides a safe playground area with equipment and large special area for picnics.
Our approach
At Tigh Sogan we promote and encourage our young people to live life to its fullest without limitations, encouraging and empowering them to recognise themselves as individuals while promoting their everyday life choices, ensuring they are cared for to the highest standards. By doing this we are proud that we have achieved an Outstanding CQC award.
We have a packed activity schedule available for all those who wish to participate, and plenty of space and quiet areas for those who choose not to. We promote and celebrate a variety of care events on a yearly basis, such as Mental Health Awareness Day, Dignity Action Day, Infection Prevention Awareness Day, and Equality and Diversity Awareness Day.
We at Tigh Sogan believe that the community is an important part of learning, and we encourage our neighbours in participating and promoting awareness, giving the neighbours a chance to get to know us and opportunity to ask questions or express opinions whilst celebrating the care events.
Independence
We pride ourselves in accessing all available resources so that we can encourage our individuals to be as independent as possible in a friendly, relaxed and calm atmosphere that ensures the people we support feel safe, respected and cared for at all times.
Daily life
There are many places of interest for our young people to enjoy including two local leisure centres, offering excellent pool facilities and specialist programmes for people with learning disabilities, such as the gym with fitness sessions with a personal trainer and advocating, educating and promoting healthy eating and living. Diamond Riding Centre, located in Carshalton, offers people with learning disabilities the opportunity to ride and work with horses and other animals. London and all it has to offer is a mere ten miles away, and easily accessible by Purley Oaks train station at the end of the road.
There are some excellent day services and educational centres close by including Day Space in Caterham and Reigate, which is a 30-minute bus ride away. Day Space offers bespoke and group sessions to young people with learning disabilities, ranging from dance and drama to cooking and self-advocacy. Calat Learning Centre is set in the heart of nearby Coulsdon, a ten-minute bus ride away, and supports young people in gaining new skills and qualifications including life skills, art, maths and English. East Surrey College is set just outside of Merstham, Surrey, which is accessible by bus for those who wish to take part in further education. East Surrey has an award-winning supported learning department.
Croydon MENCAP and CESS (Croydon Employment and Support Services) both offer support to adults with learning disabilities to find, gain and remain in paid employment.
Phab Club is run in Croydon and offers young people with learning disabilities exciting and fun opportunities every Wednesday including quizzes, games nights, discos and pool tournaments. Croydon Contacts is a group that is set in the heart of Croydon town and runs special clubs for young people, some of which include Sunday lunch club, cycling and drama club.
