His life was in crisis, and regular self-Injurious behaviour and aggression resulted in physical interventions and a number of visits to hospital.

An Initial day placement at Swinderby Lower School saw rapid progress in his emotional, cognitive and social skills, and his concentration improved thanks to a sensory diet, occupational therapy and one to-one sessions. His parents also told us they were amazed at how much his reading improved.

But Toby was still struggling at home, so began a 38-week residential placement at Â鶹ÊÓƵ. He accepted the change very well as it was explained in the context of growing up and greater independence by using a social story developed by the Â鶹ÊÓƵ MDT. He quickly became enthusiastic about school asking when he was going back, and being able to verbalise his emotions much more freely.

Toby now displays minimal challenging behaviours, can self-regulate, makes himself snacks and generally does not require assistance with hygiene routines. The food he eats is much more varied, he regularly goes swimming and has developed a passion for Rebound Therapy.

He talks about himself much more freely and enjoys regular access to the community with his peers. He’s even suggested a career as a postman, which we think would be ideal as he has improved his self-confidence and is funny, friendly and endearing.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row disable_element=”yes” css=”.vc_custom_1615983618829{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;background-color: #87b8d4 !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1615278838943{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;}”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”4/6″][vc_custom_heading text=”George’s Story” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:150%25|text_align:left|color:%23ffffff” google_fonts=”font_family:Open%20Sans%3A300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C600%2C600italic%2C700%2C700italic%2C800%2C800italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1615277607393{padding-bottom: 20px !important;}”][vc_tta_accordion active_section=”0″ collapsible_all=”true” el_id=”nobg”][vc_tta_section title=”Aggressive and unpredictable behaviour…” tab_id=”1615278158983-dbe0c9d0-be3e”][vc_column_text]Aggressive and unpredictable behaviour can be a major concern for some of the families of young people we look after.

Before George joined us at Â鶹ÊÓƵ, the smallest change could trigger anxiety and agitation he lacked focus and was frequently exhibiting self injurious behaviour and was confrontational The reassurance and support of our staff means he has made significant progress in managing his emotional regulation, and has learned to request sensory aids to help the process.

George now only exhibits a small amount of behaviours of concern and has education and learning support, which has helped him make amazing progress. Work on his motor skills means he now makes cups of tea under supervision (at school and home!), makes his own bed and is much better at his washing routine.

The improvement in emotional regulation means George regularly enjoys activities in the local community, and with the support of key workers had a day trip to London, travelling on the underground, taking a turn on the London Eye sightseeing and taking in a musical.

His ability to access the community had also been limited because of a fear of dogs before he came to Â鶹ÊÓƵ. But Animal Assisted Therapy sessions mean he is no longer scared, and the family has even decided to get a dog!

George has improved so much with us that his confidence and personality shine through, and he has blossomed into a very charismatic young man.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row disable_element=”yes” css=”.vc_custom_1615983627069{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;background-color: #a21d45 !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1615278857534{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;}”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”4/6″][vc_custom_heading text=”Nathan’s story” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:150%25|text_align:left|color:%23ffffff” google_fonts=”font_family:Open%20Sans%3A300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C600%2C600italic%2C700%2C700italic%2C800%2C800italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1615277631343{padding-bottom: 20px !important;}”][vc_tta_accordion active_section=”0″ collapsible_all=”true” el_id=”nobg”][vc_tta_section title=”When our young people present with anxieties…” tab_id=”1615278240976-395e858c-84bc”][vc_column_text el_id=”white55″]When our young people present with anxieties, it can take different forms. Nathan required full support from our staff when he arrived with us, would only eat in his room and was consuming 36 yoghurts every day.

Shy and reluctant to engage, he could not even cope being near food. This was a great cause for concern to his family as he was anxious around others and in the community. With our help, he followed auditory desensitisation and food desensitisation programmes, occupational therapy and speech and language sessions.

With intense input from our multidisciplinary team. Nathan began to develop a tolerance and interest in food, and started being educated with a small group of his peers. As his interest developed, the Speech and Language Therapy team supported him further through an oral motor skills programme.

He subsequently began to eat a greater variety of foods within the home and in the dining room with others. As the range of what he was eating increased, he would ask for snacks with much more confidence. This led to him going to restaurants in a group, and his family could now hold birthday parties – for the first time Nathan joined in the festivities and the family didn’t fear his reaction to being around others.

His parents even began to take him for walks with friends, without him becoming anxious or depressed.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row disable_element=”yes” css=”.vc_custom_1615983635436{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;background-color: #cbc141 !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/6″ css=”.vc_custom_1615278871838{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;}”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”4/6″][vc_custom_heading text=”Olivia’s story” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:150%25|text_align:left|color:%23ffffff” google_fonts=”font_family:Open%20Sans%3A300%2C300italic%2Cregular%2Citalic%2C600%2C600italic%2C700%2C700italic%2C800%2C800italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1615277648183{padding-bottom: 20px !important;}”][vc_tta_accordion active_section=”0″ collapsible_all=”true” el_id=”nobg”][vc_tta_section title=”A collaborative approach between…” tab_id=”1615278253369-3d0727bf-3f42″][vc_column_text el_id=”white55″]A collaborative approach between Â鶹ÊÓƵs highly skilled staff often reaps a wide range of benefits for our young people.

Prior to arriving with us in 2014 Olivia exhibited high levels of anxiety, often ending up in emergency respite care. She would often run to the toilet or garden to avoid being in the classroom, was disengaged and would shout over others and become physically challenging.

She attended an intensive programme of Animal Assisted Therapy sessions alongside a member of staff from the Psychology team Goals included building relationships developing expressive language. independence and confidence Olivia flourished in these surroundings.

Interventions with the Speech and Language Therapy (SalT) team helped build confidence to a point where she would join staff and peers at the table and she also attended one to-one sessions in the sensory interactive learning environment.

As her confidence grew. Olivia continued to prosper within school, she became engaged with all aspects of her curriculum and joined in social situations.

She finished her academic year in a class art gallery. and was able to explain with confidence what she liked about what she produced Work related learning followed, and she also completed her Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Her anxiety around mealtimes and particular foods has decreased and all prescribed medication has been discontinued, while her new found confidence is there for everyone at the home to see.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_accordion][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/6″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
